2005-09-18 - 5:31 a.m.

hey America...

I'm not going to get serious, I'm not going to get serious, I'm not going to get serious, I'm not...

hey, I'm trying...

I keep hearing people say that Fox News is on Bush's side... every time I read this (same link, just repeated for emphasis because I think ypu should read it again too) I click on a few more of the links linked within the article and wonder seriously why impeachment seems so unlikely a next step for our beady-eyed smirking President... and before you try to write me off as a disgruntled democrat, know that I am not... I thought Clinton had beady eyes and very questionable ethics too, but I try to live in the present because besides being a waste of time, we can not change the past... we can change the present...

hey America, I've got a question for you...

where does the buck stop now?...

were we so much more idealistic in the sixties and early seventies that we could consider impeaching a President who may have known about the theft of documents involving political fundrasing, an action that probably didn't kill anyone...

and not too many years ago we were hearing talk of impeachment over a blowjob?...

and today we are doing what about government officials who's incompetence and indecisiveness and insensitivity have cost American lives?...

have we become so (what is the word?... decadent?... ambivalent?... corrupt?) that we stare doe-eyed at our TV sets listening to reports that our President was strumming a guitar as New Orleans flooded and would not cut short his five week vacation?...

what commander gets a five week vacation while there's supposed to be a war going on that he started and doesn't seem to know how to finish?...

but that's another corruption of our values...

have we become so numb?...

have our ethics and integrity as people become so weak that we can accept political cronyism (giving a job to a friend just because he's a friend, not because he is qualified):

FEMA Director Michael Brown was brought into the organization after having been fired from his previous job directing horse shows. He had no emergency management experience, and seems to have been hired because he was the college buddy of President Bush's pal Joe Allbaugh (who now runs a firm that consults companies on how to win contracts from FEMA and other federal agencies) read it~

cronyism that directly and indirectly caused unpreparedness and inaction that lead to the unnecessary deaths of American citizens on our soil?...

and did I hear that Halliburton got the first contract to rebuild New Orleans?... wasn't there a question of ethics when that same company was given big contracts to rebuild Iraq?... but Dick Cheney was on vacation even longer than the President, so it's not his fault.... and who's minding the store now?...

we stare dumbfounded at pictures of Americans emerging from dark water like we're watching some movie or biblical story and our President and the people in charge do not know about it after it has been on every news station for three days?...

was everyone on freaking vacation?...

and we stare numbly at the President making elitist jokes about rebuilding a fellow old politician's mansion and sitting on the porch sipping lemonade or some such thing...

and we stare dumbfounded at the former first lady, as President's mother, makes "let them eat cake" comments about the poor people of New Orleans who've lost everything...

and she's serious...

yes Babs, they may not have had much, much it meant the world to them...

and when the President finally woke up from dreaming of goats, or whatever he was doing, and finally ordered the military into New Orleans, a congressman abuses power and asks the military to drive him to his house in flooded New Orleans so he can collect a few things (while people die waiting for rescue)...

what could possibly have been going through that congressman's mind?...

oh, excuse me Colonel... before you go off rescuing the poor, or whatever it is you were sent here to do, would you just let me hop in that million dollar vehicle and take a three hour tour so I can pick up a few things at my mansion?...

while simultaneously the President does a photo-op whistle-stop sound-byte that so obviously is his desperately late attempt to come off as a concerned leader action-hero (are you really so easily fooled, America?) and all he does is further delay any serious rescue attempts on that day the military finally rolled on into New Orleans... but his sleeves were rolled up, right?...

maybe I don't have questions...

maybe I just have bile in my throat...

hey America...

you believe the Republicans when they claim they are against big government?...

when they've created the most obscene money-sucking (or is that laundering?) bureacratic smokescreen of them all, the Department of Homeland Security?...

it swallowed FEMA and choked on it...

and all the kings horses and all the kings men...

and the incompetent friends of the President will still get their six-figure incomes and have their mansions and lemonade on porches and pensions and make jokes about the poor unfortunate citizens of New Orleans and Mississippi and Alabama and Florida and wherever else they find idiots who'll ignore their corruption and vote for them again...

and I single out the President because the buck is supposed to stop there...

but don't vote Democrat just because the Republicans strummed their guitars while New Orleans flooded... they are not too much different, really... Clinton had his flood in Iowa (1993) where people went without clean water for almost three weeks...

the problem is that all the lessons learned mean nothing...

the same mistakes are repeated over and over again and no one is held accountable because government is just too big and detached from us, from we, the people...

and because we do not care to change it...

any President and his cronies and all government officials are too insulated from the results of their incompetence and negligence to be prosecuted for anything...

hey America...

people died in New Orleans, people in wheelchairs drowned because the people in power at every level of government did not care...

can you imagine sitting in a wheelchair paying your meager social security to a nursing home because you've got no place else to go and need assistance just to go to the toilet and bathe and your eyes, wide with disbelief see the water rising and you feel the water rising and you taste the water rising and you know you can not breath under water and your last gasp of life as the water rises over your face to meet your eyes is why?...

where is the In God We Trust?...

where is the One Nation Under God?...

where is the all men are created equal?...

hey politicians...

if you truly believe your religious rhetoric, if you truly believe you'll meet your maker and face judgment someday... if you truly believe there will be an accounting for your decisions and deeds in this life...

you'd better hope that your heaven is as corrupt as your government, as bogged down by bureacratic red tape as your agencies, as blind as your electorat, because if it isn't, if your judge after you die does actually know all, see all, and all that...

you'll get yours, by your own beliefs and your own decisions...

you'll get yours in your own chosen way...

hey America...

you elected your government...

you allow it to continue the way it does...

you do not demand change, you are not gathering to discuss what is wrong, you are not marching on your capitol domes to protest the unnecessary deaths, the political corruption, the socio-economic unfairness as the rich get richer and the poor get poorer and are left to die in slums...

face the fact...

Hurricane Katrina and the New Orleans flood just hastened the process that government has been allowing, perpetrating, even, for many years... you want to see a third world nation?... visit some areas of central and southern Mississippi...

the state that America forgot...

and so many other American towns our government has forgotten...

and what we euphemistically call "inner cities"...

the civil rights bills of the sixties may have given more people equal rights, but the political and corporate corruption that represses the poor regardless of race, creed, religion, etc. just became more covert and entrenched in the same old ways...

the only color that really matters is green...

it is still who you know, not what you know...

you accept the corruption, the cronyism, the waste, the campaign rhetoric, the false promises, the phony smiles, the pretentious compassion, and the economic distances...

you pay the bills...

you pay the six figure salaries for your elected officials and perks that cost more than your lifetime income so they can enjoy the fruits of your labors and lose touch with your needs (if they ever had any awareness of what it was like to earn $30,000 a year or $20,000 a year or less in the first place)...

hey America, I've got a question for you...

how do you sleep at night?

ah yes, the drug companies know...

this weekend week the past two three weeks was my attempt to support The Red Cross by participating in Blogging for Relief... the first entries inspired by this effort and the events in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina can be found here:

1 * 2 * 4 * 6 * 7 * 8 * 9 * 10 * 11 * 13 * 14 * 15 * 16 * 17
18 * 19 * 20 * 21 * 23 * 25 * 911
Hey America...

and you noticed missing numbers, of course you did, you're no fools... the missing numbers are the following entries now dedicated to deliverance (from evil, madness, dirty drawers, and many other things) and respectfully dubbed:

The Mississippi Chronicles
Mess (A Message From Mississippi)
Hope (Hope Grows in Mississippi)
Anger (Anger and Angst in Mississippi)
Sigh (A Sigh From Mississippi)
Rant (A Rant From Mississippi)
Pain (Pain In Mississippi)
Rage (Rage For Mississippi)

or Messages From Mississippi because they were mostly guest entries to pass along email from a friend who witnessed Mississippi first hand cuz he lives there... bless him and his family, in fact, do it yourself...

find someone touched by the events of the past week and share some love...

and then go tell Michael and Tim and our own DLand Michael something good J
