Dr. Deborah Serani The blog of a psychologist who specializes in trauma and depression. Dealing with the aggressive person Information you can use Abuse Issues NOTE: if you care to put the links and information above on your own site, you can find the code here so you can cut, paste, and share... please do. at first I was going to leave the previous entry up longer as I convinced myself it was a bold confessional biographical get-to-know-me kind of entry... but while it may have been cathartic and somewhat confessional, on another level it is pure self-indulgence to leave it up longer... and then, on the other hand, it is a thank you to you as well, so I hope you see that... but on the other hand (many handed thought, huh?), I should not beg for comments or your attention and sometimes that is what I think I am doing... anyway, thank you for being there and it's time to move on to a more important matter... as many of you know, this entry inspired me (and many others as well) to leave the comments that turned into the list of links nicim and vickithecute and augustdreams dubbed Meme with Meaning (and hopefully many others will keep it going)... nicim made the excellent point in her entry that I quoted above... imagine if we all devoted an entry to getting this information out... cut and paste, use view source, or ask and the code will be sent to your email... as she quoted me: maybe this helps you understand... none of us want to give up on someone we love and walking away from an abuser is giving up on him, at least for that period of time... sometimes it takes almost as much strength to stay as it does to leave, but ultimately staying does more harm than good (even if we do not want to see that)... walking away is the tough love, it is taking away the alcoholic's bottle, it is telling the abuser that you will no longer enable his abuse and he must deal with his issues on his own... it is not called tough love because it is easy, after all... and I quote her: its important to understand that the broken hearts, damaged lives and pain caused from physical, mental, emotional, or psychological abuse happens to real people. People youve laughed with, cried with, and come to know so well, and whose lives you share every time you come here.. we hopefully strike a chord that resonates through the song that plays in every human heart and gives those who are hurting the courage to stand up and reach out for help... and those too proud to reach out, the strength to just walk away on their own... however it happens, whatever the reason, we hope that you take the step that only you can take... the step away from the abuse... the step away from the pain... the step toward your self-respect, your self-worth, your self preservation... if you have kids, all the more reason to break the cycle... before they are too caught up in it... and if they are already caught up in it, all the more reason to act now... not tomorrow, not after you try to talk it out one more time... not after the swelling goes down... and surely not after the next time you or your kids become a punching bag... care about yourself now... before it's too late...
