2004-07-26 - 11:33 a.m. are we ready for some football? well, you might know by now (if you've been reading a while) that I love playing games, especially games that compares statistics and combine some measure of evaluating data with intuition and chance and fantasy sports games fit that bill nicely... I am not a fan of war games or shoot-em-up games though, probably for the same reasons I am not a fan of war movies or locker room humor, my testosterone levels do not need to be fed by macho posturing, violence, or pretending to face death and I believe in and strive to actualize honesty without harm (remember?)... I can ignore some of the hostile aspects of life and games, but war is just plain stupid even on a gameboard (and I was reminded of that this weekend as on almost two consecutive nights I was asked to be a fourth in some X-Box war game and I wandered around the screen shooting at rocks and getting blown up a lot, but the others seemed to enjoy my participation so it was a gift I could and did give them)... I'd much rather play cards or sports or trivia games that inspire thought and/or physical exersion without threats of personal violence or harm... and what has that got to do with football, we might ask... well, fantasy football season starts soon and while football is one of the most violent of games I can enjoy, the object is not to hurt anyone (though some might differ in opinion, usually those who also enjoy war games where the object is to hurt or kill someone), but rather to move a ball across a field in order to score points... I don't ramble on about the games I play much because, so far at least, rarely do I find any interest in playing fantasy sports here at DLand... at least that was the case for baseball (and I don't have much to brag about as, no matter what I seem to do, my teams are suffering from bad luck, injuries, and my lack of daily time at managing them this year... I am second in one league and still have an outside shot at respectable finishes in others, but this might be the first year I do not have a league winner since I started playing fantasy baseball and it is the first year wherein I have not lead a league for most of the season... humbling, no doubt, but still fun)... anyway, it is time for football and I spent much of yesterday creating four leagues and if you are interested in playing fantasy football, check out the rules over at Yahoo (where I set up free leagues) and if you think you can get into it (in other words know football, like stats, can choose players, and will stay active in the game all season) then let me know through notes or email or just call (407-325-1482)... it is free to play, signing up only requires a Yahoo ID (which requires minimal information), and it's a lot of fun if you enjoy sports, numbers, and games involving sports and numbers... if not, well, maybe we can find other ways to share some fun (like Spades or other games online... I wish I had more time for them and might be talked into finding time if anybody was interested... hey, it's better than nothing and might keep my mind alive until someone offline comes along, ya know?)... I am just realizing that the weekend flew by and I don't think I mentioned that Saturday night was a birthday party for one of the guys at work (one of the nurses donated her house and did all the cooking for the event, I supplied the bottles of carbonated sugar-water) and besides the aforementioned shoot-em-up game (the cool think was that it washooked up to a projection TV so the screen was a whole wall), there was Karaoke and I was convinced to sing New York, New York and while I heard all the flaws (just like Mr. Tanner, right?), I was applauded and praised and told they were surprised (which is what the audience is supposed to do at Karaoke nights I suppose) and they then asked me to do Amazing Grace and The Middle (by Jimmy Eat World) cuz those were the other songs on the Karaoke CD that nobody else did... good old fashined silly fun was had by all... I think...
