2004-09-26 - 1:22 p.m. and after a nap... still here (as in connected to the internet) and still intact (as in no windows broken and no roof leaks that we can see from inside)... a look outside says it would be prudent to remain inside... there are moments of calm (not eye-like calm, just a let up in the winds and rains as we find ourselves between the bands that form the hurricane) and then suddenly ther's stuff blowing around and doors banging and thuds... the winds started out from the north last night and then switched to being from the east (which is great news for casa de candoor cuz we face the south (Rasputin's window and one window in the living room) and west (the rest of the place) and now the winds are mostly coming from the south and southeast... the southerly winds are the scary ones as they test the tape on the windows... the apartment management did a decent job of having the debris cleaned up, mostly (the workmen for the apartment next to us have left empty cans here and there) and the trees still standing (we lost all five in front of this building during Charlie) seem to be ok, except for a broken branch or few... as the storm passes us the winds will switch to coming from the west and southwest, but hopefully it will not strengthen over Gulf waters and those westerly winds will be storm, not hurricane winds... I'm still loving the energy in the air... somewhere in the night I heard someone say that one minute of energy of a category 3 hurricane had enough energy to light up the entire USA for one year... I found this quote: "A mature tropical cyclone can release heat at a rate upwards of 200,000,000,000,000,000,000 watts. This is two hundred times the total rate of human electrical production, and is equivalent to detonating a 10 megaton nuclear bomb every 20 minutes." here... now that's power... other than the storm, it's business almost as usually around here... except that I am starting to feel cooped up... the ice cubes in the freezer keep melting because Raspy keeps his oreos in there and he opens the freezer often (but then seems to need twenty or thirty seconds to get a couple of oreos out... and then there are the crumbs)... the same happens with the fridge (Precious uses it to cool herself), which is why they are always throwing out spoiled food (that, and the fact that they seldom eat leftovers, like the chicken that they made last week)... and there's a gallon of spoiled milk in there as well... sitting around here too long is not a good idea... they really are oblivious to their habits and the mess... most of the people I have lived with have pretty wasteful habits by my standards... maybe it's an American thing... maintaining focus on living the way I want to live, the way that is right for me, can be challenging when I am not living alone... that's why I write about it... bringing the feelings into thoughts and then bringing the thoughts into words and then putting the words out where I can read them and then reading them and digesting what I mean gives me a sense of reevaluation and direction... and the reminder that I do not have to make the same choices as those around me... I remember first coming to this realization as a very young child... it is the core of my peace and security (awareness of choice, independence, and what is right for me)... and those closest to me along the way through this life have been those who understand this, if not actualize it themselves... and then realizing that everything is a personal choice, the probabilities for intimate compatibility is easy to estimate... obviously my brain has too many scientific method thoughts running through it after searching for hurricane information, huh?... I'm bored...
