and the changes (work whine)

this entry is composed of, or at least started out as, a work whine (it may be part rant, but then, it may not even be a rant, sometimes I just feel like whining) that includes at least some (a lot if you're a regular here) information you most likely already know, but as I am changing jobs here I felt like looking back and reflecting... the next entry (Dear Boss) does a similar thing as it is a three page letter to administration (that I hopefully did not already upload here) that I still have not given them because I know them well enough to know that it would be filed in the trash and probably produce some animosity toward me (based on past experience), so I am trying a different approach these days and waiting for the right moment to slip the ideas in the letter into their consciousnesses...

it does not matter how good or right an idea is if people are not ready to be receptive to it...

and (did I say this already?) this whining may turn out to be repetitive as this job, in terms of atmosphere for change and progress and improvement, has been a lot like walking a treadmill... speaking of walking a treadmill, or more precisely, pumping an elliptical machine, I need to get to the gym closer to every day and mentioning it here and anywhere the thought pops up will hopefully help me remember and actualize the thought...

meanwhile, back at work, it is business as usual in that, depending on the mix of people working (and it's different most nights), little gets done and I do my part and come to sit here and write... though tonight the air is thick with negs (that would be negative vibes or negative energy) as I am with three of the most complaining negative people in the place and they are feeding off each other, perhaps getting some thrill off the validation they give each other's complaints...

these are the staff who do almost no work, but exhaust themselves with stress by seriously complaining all night about how much work they have to do... this is, from my experience, the personality of a lot of people who work night shift in a hospital setting... some are forced to the night shift because they are too lazy or incompetent to hold down a job where they actually have to produce for eight hours... and others choose the night shift because they do not want to produce for eight hours...

I was, for the almost four years I've been on the night shift here, the thorn in everyone's side (including, or maybe especially the supervisors)... at first the supervisors did their best to claim I was not doing my job and I was a trouble maker because I was doing things that no one had done before in this hospital, audit medical records, organize behavioral data, and actually work for most of the eight hours instead of sitting around socializing, eating, nodding off, and taking three to four hour sleep breaks...

by actually working, I was a threat to the status quo and they wanted me gone... management bought into the supervisor's complaints and tried to give me evaluations that were inaccurately negative... I challenged the evaluations, basically asking them to show proof of the ratings, and when they could not they had to change the evaluations... but management doesn't like to be challenged so the troublemaker label was easy for them to buy into...

over the course of time, however, more and more managers starting enjoying the benefits of my initiatives and quietly started supporting me, especially after some of the things I was doing were exactly what the auditors cited the place for not doing (and didn't management feel foolish to realize they couldn't show the auditors the systems they were asking for because they had not given my work an official stamp of approval and there were no policies and procedures relating to what I was doing... one by one managers started taking pieces of my work and making it their own, getting it approved, and asking me to train others)...

though for years none were ready to actually come out and challenge the night shift supervisor because she was here since the place opened (eighteen years) and was the prime force behind the do-as-little-as-possible attitude and long sleep breaks... and she had the support of all the other night staff who were conditioned to sleeping and doing little else all night... so I swung back and force between initiating more new work and stopping all work entirely, therein presenting management with the simple question, "do you want me to do the extra work I do?"...

of course they told me yes, but they continued to fall into the peer pressure trap so the cycle repeated, as I said, for years... it was in the past year that they finally decided as a group that they wanted to institute my extra work throughout the facility and gradually they are trying to overcome the environment of laziness... we're at a point where some supervisors appreciate the systems and some just accept them reluctantly, though there are still complaints under the breath of a few supervisors and a lot of staff... but what can be expected when management and supervisors drag their feet and allow staff to get away with doing nothing for years...

and now that I am switching back to day shift, I am stepping back from the night shift environment and seeing more... the laziness and anti-work perspective still permeates the atmosphere... even those who do choose to work are generally lazy about it (some simply do not want to get up out of their chairs... many are obese)... and most, instead of doing their own jobs, are constantly complaining that others don't do their jobs... this includes supervisors who have the power to do something about it, but they are afraid of confrontation so they complain and ignore and blame their bosses...

so now I head into the lion's den... working the day shift with all of management around (my office is in a hallway with most of the other clinical staff, department heads, DON (Director of Nursing), and CNO (Chief Nursing Officer)... two higher level administrators, the Administrator and the Comptroller, Human Resources, and the Business Office are in another area of the building, but it's not that big a place and working the day shift I'll be bumping into all of them regularly... and probably asked to go to a lot more meetings than I attend now...

it's taken them (only one change in management) more than five years to be ready to hear my voice at their meetings (they are pretty predictable... I think a few of them have had their medication adjusted so they are in a stable phase... no, not joking, some of the administration is so manic and so over reactive to stress that they used to have to go home early on high stress days or when confronted with a hectic day... most of them are in management because they do not have the emotional stability or skills to work the units or directly with a patient population on a full time basis)...

but they are mostly nice people... rarely does one get into the health care field without at least the initial motivation to care about others... it's just that burn out comes faster than people realize and denial sets in because people feel they are stuck financially in a job that is stressing them out, which leads to frustration and what I call functional burnout... that is, people can function enough to do their job, but seek to do as little as possible and give of themselves as little as possible because they feel overwhelmed by the stress and trauma inherent in the field and the constant giving that the health care field demands...

but I've got to believe that if they didn't think they were ready to hear me, they'd not have asked me to take a position where I'll be talking to them a lot more than I do now... my hope is they will continue to be receptive to my ideas and input and maybe, once I learn more about the systems they have in place (instead of just creating and using my own on the units), we can budge this place out of the stone ages in terms of information management and systems organization...

so I choose to see hope because I like to see hope and that's why I believe there's always hope...
