2005-09-16 - 10:24 a.m.

another night, another game (work)

well, for the second night out of three the powers that be have decided to float Berry to another unit, leaving me with Elpien, who sits and does nothing but less than even her minimum, and two staff working overtime who will be very sleepy very shortly and have to be trained in our system and on Thursday nights we do not have time to train new staff (especially with no warning, we were told this after we came in the door tonight, so our plans to get a lot of work done tonight were undermined)

after three nights of hearing I dont know from Elpien, I asked the shift charge nurse, who basically did what she always did, which is undermine any real work from day one shes belittled the extra effort Berry and I put in and did her best to undermine any auditing of paperwork or extra work we did administration does not want to face the fact that Berry and I are the only staff theyve got that does more work without supervision than any other night staff, so shes probably convinced someone in administration that interchanging staff is a good thing

so I asked her about it when I asked her, she told me to leave staffing to her and speak to my supervisor as she walked past me I called after her saying I am formally requesting to talk to you and she returned a little while later with her cackles up asking me what I wanted I told her that I asked my supervisor three days in a row for an explanation and there is none, so I am following the chain of command and asking her

she told me a few managers met and decided that rearranging night staff was a good idea, then pointed at one of the people who works this unit (who was working overtime and assigned on another unit) and then, rather than answer me when I asked why this change happened on the night we have the most work to do, she pointed at another co-worker and shouted, "are you saying she can't do the work?"...

she repeated it a few times and everyone froze to listen as she tried to challenge me to tell her that the co-worker was incapable of doing the work she went as far to insinuate I did say that...

since that had nothing to do with my question, but she was looking to stir up trouble so she could play supervisor and accuse me of starting the trouble I just said, I do not appreciate you trying change the subject to start a conflict or set up a confrontation between staff, this is not what I expect from a supervisor, so I will continue to follow the chain of command as per policy to inquire as to why you are doing this

she had nothing to say to that, probably expecting me to follow her on her change of subject, so I repeated it and walked away to continue my work knowing her, shell probably twist the situation to report that I created a problem when she runs to her boss to complain she does that most mornings, pressing her agenda with lies and misinterpretations that management believe, so tomorrow Ill be the subject of her complaints

in the end, if they continue this deliberate undermining or work, staff moral, and staff relations, Ill just sit back and read a book and do the minimum work like everybody else I love to read, so Ill be happy and Ill deal with the ethical issues of deliberately providing lower quality utilization review, quality control, and patient care in my own way eventually it will come up at a meeting and Ill state my case and theyll decide what to do

guess its time to play chess

these happy times of escaping into the writing might be very short lived here at work as what usually happens when the shift charge gets this sort of bug up her but is they have a meeting and reprimand her for allowing whatever might be allowed that isnt in the rules (like sleeping and such, which is her primary concern not that people sleep, but that she gets her sleep break when the hospital banned sleeping on the premises because it is {and always has been) against policy, she pouted at that meeting when the hospital decided one hour breaks were not allowed because that is not {and never has been} policy, she pouted at that meeting none of it would have come up if she was not trying to power trip for her own benefit with various staff at the time) I just heard shes already lied to Elpien about the question I asked her tonight

it is sad, but this is the way human beings do things from my experience Ive worked in places that have a higher standard of care and much better organization, but theres always been the underlying do as little as possible to get mentality in every place Ive worked

maybe the saddest thing of all is when management has that attitude in a health care environment no wonder I started feeling burnt out the first time around in the health care system it was worse then, I was middle upper management feeling a whole lot more responsible with a lot more to lose

meanwhile, on to brighter planets

so on the way home from work I finally got my oil changed... that is, I got the cr's oil changed, by oil is still sticking to my ribs too well, actually... and while they were changing my oil, I wandered around the store and bought some food, a Halloween T-Shirt that is bright orange with a giant black pumpkin and the words "I know jack" written on them and a few other items of necessity and impulse...

one of them being The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy DVD, which I watched while attempting to stay awake to do laundry and generally clean the place she does have to when she comes by tomorrow for a day and night of the Zoo, a card party, a midnight movie, and a video-and-slumber party tomorrow...

she can clean next time (that'll probably cost me)...

I shall attempt to convey some deeper or more personal or relevant or worthwhile thoughts later or tomorrow, since I have successfully kept the news off and have hardly been browsing much for most of this week so therefor have very little in the way of substance to write about other than the mundane pleasures and frustrations of daily like around here...

being that is the primary purpose of this diary, all's well...

however those of you who would like to read something that more than one person actually called "good" or better, then you might see what I have to say about family values or 9/11 or or heroes or belly fat or abuse, well, go right ahead...

and you should read the Messages From Mississippi doe another segment awaits the photos Tim should be putting up in his diary any day now...

the past month has been busy in my head and for my fingers...

see?

and even though I am not paying attention to the news, I still care and if you do too, visit the New Orleans Journal for an honest account of a few American Heroes who stuck it out and kept working in New Orleans and are part of the rebuilding process...

and all the links below...

this weekend week the past two three weeks was my attempt to support The Red Cross by participating in Blogging for Relief... the first entries inspired by this effort and the events in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina can be found here:

1 * 2 * 4 * 6 * 7 * 8 * 9 * 10 * 11 * 13 * 14 * 15 * 16 * 17
18 * 19 * 20 * 21 * 23 * 25 * 911

and you noticed missing numbers, of course you did, you're no fools... the missing numbers are the following three entries now dedicated to deliverance (from evil, madness, dirty drawers, and many other things) and respectfully dubbed:

The Mississippi Chronicles
Mess (A Message From Mississippi)
Hope (Hope Grows in Mississippi)
Anger (Anger and Angst in Mississippi)
Sigh (A Sigh From Mississippi)
Rant (A Rant From Mississippi)

because they were mostly guest entries to pass along email from a friend who witnessed Mississippi first hand cuz he lives there... bless him and his family, in fact, do it yourself... find someone touched by the events of the past week and share some love... and then go tell Michael and Tim and our own DLand Michael something good J
