2005-05-30 - 9:40 p.m. trying an entry from work it would be quite convenient if this hospital allowed us to bring our laptop computers into work since we can, on most nights, have some down time where aside from fifteen minute rounds and staying alert for any problems is all there is to do... it's foolish, from my perspective, to treat a night shift in the same way as all other shifts, because there is only so much that can be done in the eight hours on a night shift... officially, the paperwork we are assigned to do can be completed in an hour, though we do more in depth chart auditing on my unit simply because we'd go stir crazy (or fall asleep) if we were to just sit around for seven hours as the other units do... and the record demonstrates that fact, as over the last three years every unit has had repeated incidents of staff fired for sleeping on the job except this one... but the administration won't learn and still ban laptops, videos, TVs, video games, playing cards, and just about anything that might keep us alert, no less awake... the foolish formality of the working world never made much sense to me, since it often does not deal with the reality of the working environment and forces a workforce to utilize covert methods to get the job done more efficiently than the SOP (standard operating procedures) allow... perhaps it is not the same everywhere, but from my experience in health care, it is the exception, not the rule, that the work environment is organized and managed at optimal efficiency... so anyway, here I sit on my break with my laptop, considering bringing it in more often and typing during my lunch and breaks (which the powers that be might still find a violation of their rules) and wonderimg just what sort of thoughts might pop through my head in this environment... the comfort level is certainly far from home in the big green chair, but ways can be found to adjust in time... I suppose I might use the time to read email and maybe even start responses if I feel I can concentrate (which will depend on where I am and with whom I am working)... if I stay on the unit I definitely am constantly listening for patients and therein too distracted to really get any rambling started... so the logistics of this writing at work still must be worked out, but the idea is further along tonight than it has been since I started at this place... there was more to this and when I find it, I'll add it... I think the primary reason I do not figure out more ways to bring my laptop to work or use the computer at work to write for myself is the nonsense I might write while at this madhouse... it is not the kind of madhouse Id like to hang out in for long because it is run by incompetent and insensitive people who are completely reactive (as opposed to proactive) and who pretend to put the patient first, but ignore the inconsistencies, provide minimal oversight and almost no supervision, and neglect the the primary needs of the patients... it is not what they intend to do, I think, but it is the outcome of their management of the incompetent lead by the lazy... I once had a worklife journal, long long ago when life was rather harsh as I was dragging myself out of the gutter after a devastating relationship blew up in my face and and left me dead, well, mostly, where I rambled on about work, mostly, and if I brought my writing to work Id probably start that up again because I do not want to focus on what happens around here much because it is not productive... I know I do not want to read whining or complaining or how ridiculously inadequate the health care system is or how we as a species/culture neglect and abuse our children in this country... so what else is new?... ...
