fictional influences

ever see a movie that you feel like you've seen before but wonder how that could be cuz the movie just came out to theatres and you are seeing it during it's first run?... well, that's the feeling I got while I was watching (and now, after) Secret Window tonight... Helena and I went to see it at the dinner theatre tonight (salad and pizza for me) and we took Precious (she's been cooped up in the house for the past week cuz it's been Spring Break down here so she was happy to get out... laughing, we discussed have to remember to talk to her dad about care and feeding of his daughter... let's see, movie $6.50, food $20{approximately and conservatively, including two six packs of Pepsi}... since she's a good kid and fun, I won't charge for babysitting {I can see a pillow aimed at me for that tease}... her aunt might have gotten the same vib cuz they went to see The Passion of the Christ earlier today... Raspy was out on a date for the day and was asleep when we got home so we'll have to catch up with him tomorrow)...

so anyway, as I'm watching I am remembering reading the book in bits and pieces (thankfully I have a good blockhead when it comes to going to see movies I've already read and can usually put the book out of my head or at least distance myself from it enough to treat the movie as a different story... after all, many stories are similar, yet actually different stories) and I remember liking the twists and turns in the book better than the movie (which is often the case as a book can offer so much more for the imagination) and found the details of the book played with my head a lot more than the movie did, but then, rarely does a screenplay do justice to a great story... I found flaws with Panic Room too (written by the same screenwriter)... of course it is almost always easy to find flaws after the fact and maybe I am being too critical... and yet, that's what the art of creative storytelling is about in many ways, taking the same situations and events most of us live in our lives and making them more interesting by throwing in surprises...

ah, but it is all opinion in the end, and mine is no better or worse than anyone else's... it's just mine, so it's special to me...

so what was the day like before the movie?... ummm, sleep... and trying to get the other computer, the old desktop, to run scan disk and it keeps resetting before it can get past checking folders and I shut down everything except the network and I'm wondering if I have to disconnect the network to scan disk (and defrag, for that matter)... not a good thing, not to be able to scan disk and defrag, considering I get many megabytes of email each week and delete most of it... let's see, so far this weekend I've deleted more than a hundred thousand emails that cleared more than a gig from the hard drive... after compacting the mail folders, defragging seemed sensible... another reason to have to call the DSL people besides the $200 rebate they never credited to my account...

and now that we got home, The Good Son is on the tube... story of a child sociopath... Precious has never seen it and wanted to... I sat down here to write this entry and seem to be watching more of the movie than I had intended... as usual, watching a movie about people with blinders on, I find myself asking are people really that stupid (or in denial) in real life?...

I'd like to stop criticizing humanity one of these days, it's really not my thing and rather unproductive (not that I always have to be productive)... I just get bored when I'm alone too long (a few years is approaching too long, I think) and my inner Buddha is somehow lost in the flames (humans burn other humans if you get too close, you know?... and besides, my inner Christ has been crucified enough for one life... never enough?... oh, do we now go into a Monty Pythonesque The Martyr Song number?... complete with dancing girls? {do dancing girls really complete things?}... dancing boys?... dancing boys dressed as dancing girls?... maybe we'll just stick with non-gender robes... all cotton, cuz we wouldn't want to offend any other animals {no, offending humans is a job in itself}... I think maybe, after watching the Home Alone kid turn his genius toward evil {if he'd only have used it for good}, I've somehow been influenced by rumours of a new film called Saved {maybe watching the trailer helped... and besides, Mandy Moore is from Orlando} coming out around Memorial Day, a rather bipolar USA holiday that gives me one more line of potentially offensive babble in this and now for something completely different irreverent parenthetic tangent... or something like that)...

yes, so anyway, party on Garth...
