2003-11-23 - 1:19 a.m. another early Saturday night went to see The Cat in The Hat tonight... the local theatre pub (a fast-food dinner theatre) is not running first run movies... of course the price changed from $4.50 to $6.50, but that's still less than most first run theatres and it's nice to have a table, more space, and food... of course if I want to really become part of a film (and I love to), I prefer a comfy (albeit expensive) dark no-distraction theatre... but since Helena likes the dinner theatre we go there a lot... the film obviously needed a lot more dialogue than Dr. Seuss wrote, but I wish they'd have rhymed the dialogue more... even if it drove people crazy, the purist (child) in me wanted more Seuss... Mike Myers was good, but a Cowardly Lion meets Curly Howard (from the Three Stooges) meets Fat Bastard 'Cat in the Hat' took some getting used to... and some obvious site and language gags were missed... so lots left to be desired, but worth a few hours, especially for Seuss kids like me... I would not be a purist if I did not comment about this though... this movie was amusing... it was not Dr. Seuss and should not have been sold as Dr. Seuss... Dr. Seuss may have appreciated the potty humor and attempts to get adults amused enough to buy the video for their kids, but it was not the Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss... so Hollywood taints yet another wonderful childhood memory by prostituting it's innocence and lack of sexuality... the market demands sexuality, the movie was fun, but it was not Dr. Seuss and should have been marketed as "not your parent's 'Cat In The Hat'"... and what's this about another Peter Pan movie?... of course I am excited, but as usual it is bittersweet excitement... I know I am never truly satisfied when my iconic childhood stories are made into movies (the Disney animated version is still my favorite, but even it left much in my imagination hungry for more)... going to a movie after living with the story in my mind since childhood is almost always like going to a restaurant and finding some favorite foods not served there... you leave wanting more... and then there's my wish to be part of the creation process whenever a favorite story becomes a film or show... the writer-actor's ego dreams with hunger (or is that envy?)... alas, my people never called... in other entertainment news, SNL has Haley Berry hosting with Britney Spears as the musical guest... can masturbatory fantasies be far behind?... oh yeah, this is not E!... it is my personal daily life diary... so what happened yesterday (I know you are just dying to know, right?... well, I can dream... and believe)... wait, before I think about the day, I must comment on Britney's voice... whether it is the mixing and audio processing or her real voice, she reminds me more and more of Cindi Lauper... now I loved Cindi for her uniqueness and seemingly fearless playfulness, but her voice does have it's limitations... she was great at the boppy song, the fun song, the up tempo song... it took the perfect song for her to do a ballad and she found it in Time After Time... Britney did not find it in the song she chose tonight... her voice cracked too much... she does not have the vocal poise and depth the carry off a ballad that requires holding soft sustained notes... I say this with love, for no matter how commerically someone may sellout, I want to believe that there is a sensitive creative artist behind the make-up, plastic, costumes, and engineering... until she develops her voice a lot more she should leave those soft ballads for girls who can actually sing whole notes... now, about my own exciting talents (errr, life)... after napping this morning I woke to watch Ohio State blow a season by losing to Michigan... now I am torn when it comes to sports because I have lived in and bonded with many places... I root for teams from all over because it is more fun to feel personally involved in a game (ultimately, I'd much rather be actively playing than spectating, but sharing the viewing of a game with friends can be fun too)... so Sally is from Ohio and a die-hard Ohio State football fan... so in the last few years I've started rooting for Ohio State cuz it's fun to share in the rooting... but there was a time I was a Michigan fan which goes back to my teens when I spent a summer roaming around Michigan and Wisconsin... so every year now I'm a little torn when the Ohio State Michigan game comes around... I usually root for the one who has a chance for the national title... Ohio State did, until today's loss... ultimately I have a favorite in most traditional rivalries... and some of those have become more favorite favorites than others... for instance, I loved the Nebraska Oklahoma rivalry (and still think it was dumb of them to cancel that one) and I always rooted for Oklahoma... so the fact that Oklahoma is kicking butt big time this year is reason for me to cheer... ultimately when two favorites meet, I am happy if either team wins... it's especially fun when I play video sports games (and I miss Sam's PS2 a lot sometimes)... anyway, the game was how I spent the afternoon with Sally... the movie and dinner was how I spent the evening with Helena... and watching SNL was how I spent the past hour and a half while I wrote here and there... and then I came here to write this entry as The Outer Limits asks for some attention... one of these days I will find friends like me and I'll share all night long fun... one of these days I will find intimacy and fall in love again... for now, I take what I can get and mostly play with myself after the friends I know go to bed... so how was your Saturday?...
