wow, devastation... the eerie surreal experience of walking around downed trees last night turned into a pretty amazing sight as daylight brought the reality of the destruction into full view... the bare wood roof was everywhere, neighbors were talking about the flooding in their apartments and smashed cars and the rest of the day, finding everything for miles around shut down and the radio asking people to stay off the roads and hearing there'd be an evening curfew...

the land phones were not working, cell phones very inconsistent (though I hear ATT customers were having little trouble getting through, Bellsouth, Sprint, and NyNex customers were wasting their time trying to use their phones for days)... so the only news was car radio news and we were suppose to stay off the roads...

but being we were so ill prepared for long term powerlessness, we set out this morning to find supplies, realizing that we might be without power for a while (though somehow denial still ruled and I seemed to be the only one really wanting to go shopping for emergency supplies {the matches Raspy said he had when we were shopping the day before turned out to be one book}... roommates can be quite frustrating when they procrastinate in denial even more than I do, ya know?)... thanks to a rather selfish girlfriend who had a cool house and no loss of power, I wasted precious gas and we were shut out of supplies we could have gotten had we thought it through even a little... see, Sally's girlfriend said she had lots of supplies at her place and so we drove over there... she actually just wanted him to stay and Precious and I to go away... when Sally's car broke down in her driveway, she loaned him her car to get us home, but then I had to drive him back to drop off her car... by the time we finally got to the stores that were open, they were out of everything... she had nothing in emergencies supplies to offer, by the way... but what the heck, that is life around here these days and that has been life for me for a long time and will remain as it is until I find the one who will live and share and think and care and dance and sing and share everything as openly and freely and carefully and so on and so forth and all that jazz...

so we returned home to my one flashlight with a few extra candles and a few extra batteries and some extra water and forgot about ice, but what the heck, we survived... and naturally there was plenty of diet pepsi and pepsi cuz how could we get through a hurricane and it's aftermath without those essentials... oh yeah, we couldn't find matches...

surprisingly, as evening came, it got dark again...
