2005-12-17 - 11:16 a.m. King Kong and wanderings we went to see the Kong last night... I was a tad reluctant because I have seen several versions of King Kong starting with the original which I've seen at least fifty times without exaggeration (and still remains a classic of the genre considering it was made in 1933 and the first 'talking' motion picture in any genre was made just a few years earlier) and the Jessica Lange version at least a dozen times... yes, I am very old and watch an exhorbitant amount of video in this lifetime... anyway, I know the story inside out and was not sure I wanted to see it all played out again...
. . . . . I was not sorry I went, in fact, I think this may be the best version yet... no, this was by far the best version yet... Peter Jackson moves up yet another notch on the directors list in my mind... he may have the epic adventures genre locked... I would love him to do the final Harry Potter films... I also like the way he can be found doing a cameo in most of his films, a la Hitchcock... and since he also produces and writes screenplays, I look for him to be an icon in the movie business for a long time, especially when (and I expect him to) he moves into other genres... I look forward to The Lovely Bones which is due out in 2007... Jack Black did not ruin it... I mean, I like Jack Black and many of his movies, but he's not shown me much acting ability (yet) other than to play mostly himself in almost cartoony roles (and maybe I have not seen enough of his work and it probably doesn't help that I used to mistake him for Silent Bob and associate him with those movies, which I like, but still, my brain is rather foggy skewed so nevermind)... I did not expect him to carry off a serious, almost villianous role, but he did a pretty good job of it and I like him even more now for it... the CGI was excellent, period... the girl grew on me... I didn't remember her from The Ring and don't recall Mulholland Dr. at all, though I am pretty sure I've seen it... it took a while as my first reaction was to not like her face for the role, but along the way she grew into the part (enough for me to want to see Ellie Parker and Stay, two of her other 2005 films (she's been a very busy girl)... in fact, after reading a bit about it, I really want to see the latter) and by the time I see it on the small screen I just might agree with Precious who said she loved the casting... another long time reason I had trouble taking the Kong films seriously is how this megolith Ape has human emotions and falls in love with a human girl the size of his finger... and though some parts were more unrealistic than I'd have liked and I would have enjoyed exploring the back stories of Kong and some of the characters more, they actually handled it quite well, considering much reality must be suspended to get into this story in the first place... of course part of me always wanted to see a more romantic (not in any perverse or genetic mating sense) ending, but then, you oughta know by now that I always find myself dreaming of the happiest of happy endings no matter how a story ends because I really want to believe in the goodness of the himan heart and spirit... on other lines, I've always wanted the story to ask what happened to the other giant apes, Kong's family, for instance... this was the first version of Kong to actually suggest, briefly and only visually, that there were other giant apes once upon a time, but no discussion or even speculation among the characters as to how a single giant ape came to be on this island... last of his kind?... why?... and if the sequel road is followed, how?... all critical viewing aside, I'd say they struck a very good balance of humor and scary bits, major action scenes and gross bloody gore, but (and this may be my love of science fiction and the theatre coming out) not enough real science and behind the scenes theatrical information to be a true classic for me... of course it was a very long movie (someone said over 3 hours) and adding more detail might have made it too long... I think it'll be a blockbuster though... easily... and possibly have a Kong 2 and 3 like Jurasic Park (it's intensity and action reminded me a lot of that film)... so much better than Godzilla 2000, if you wondered... it's weird, maybe it's because I have a history with this one... I haven't had this much to say about a film in a long time and I've enjoyed other films more, but definitely go see Kong Kong in theatres... ok, so what else is new?... I don't know, I'll include more of the places I've been in the past week for your perusal... some are much visted favorites of mine and other links in these lists are one time finds that I found interesting enough to pass along and sometimes I am so shocked by a site I simply must put the link in here cuz I don't want to be the only one so shocked, ya know?... if you find yourself linked below, I'll trust you to sort out which category you fit into and if you do not find yourself linked below, kick me (with big bunny slippers on or some equivalently cushioned footwear) or somehow throw yourself in front of my truck because I just might have left you out if your site was up during one of my many browser crashes and you might even be one of my all time favorite people and deserve not only to be on these links lists, but highly praised in almost every entry I write anywhere... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week... and this is where I wandered this week...
