getting there

back at work in the usual mixed up management where there is so much waste of man power (and woman power) that it's no wonder everything costs so much in health care (and everything else if most corporations, especially those with twenty-four hour operations, are so poorly organized and run that people can do little or nothing for forty hours a week... and the starting pay is around $10 an hour for each tech (there are twelve here tonight, half making a few bucks an hour more than starting rate) and substantially higher for the four nurses who sit and chat or nap most of the night...

tonight the nurse in charge walked around for two and a half hours trying to figure out if we had too many staff and finally sent a couple of staff home... that's when I stopped doing the extra work I do because they left my unit short staffed, so the projects the administrators asked me to work on will wait yet another night... communication between higher administration and front line supervisors is pitiful, which is why so little gets done and most staff can get away with doing nothing... the good news for us is that I am settling in with my hallway computer early (and for the first time in more than a week) so I just may get some rambling in tonight...

so where have I been (besides putting together the scribbles into the previous few dozen entries that suddenly appeared today)...

this weekend was fun, but as usual, if feels too short because in my mind our culture has the whole work ethic and life schedule upside down... I believe life's true work is love and being with those you love and that should be the focus of our five days that we now call a work week and the two days we call a weekend should be devoted to the rest of the world, to good deeds or work or whatever we choose to call it... kind of like the 10% tithe thing Catholics have going... we should give 10% of our lives to work and others and 90% of our lives should be spent loving those closest to us, our partners and families...

of course, most of the world appears to disagree with me, but that is ok... I do not mind thinking differently (or being different) and I figure (hopefully) that the rest of the world will get it right eventually...

meanwhile, I play the game and give five days a week to the tithe, or whatever it might be called so that everyone can understand the concept (don't want the concept written off by atheists or agnostics or Muslims or Jews or any other faiths just cuz the word starts out mostly Catholic... or Christian... religions confuse me, or rather, which religion believes what confuses me... seems they all start off for the same reason saying the same thing, but ego or some sort of power trip takes over and demands divisions and uniquenesses that are not only so unnecessary, but often quite incompatible with and hostile to each other (so much for peace on Earth good will to all, ya know?)... I think very religion people have serious control issues they should address before they leave home...

anyway, I worshipped at the alter of music this weekend at the House of Blues (which ironically has a cross on it's doors and some Jesus graffiti on it's walls, but I tried not to read too much into that even after Precious told me that the headliners {Mae} were actually on a Christian music label... was I being preached to with rock and roll by those who once {and still} call it the Devil's music?... I mean, was I secretly proselytized?... if you are not laughing, you worry too much or just don't get my sense of humor... not that I was trying to be funny, actually, but I find the concept of someone trying to secretly influence me amusing)...

I will have to read the lyrics before I pass judgment...

ah, the irony you miss if you don't live in my head (or understand me)... judgment, if case you missed it, is an activity of mind (or body) that I consider almost the biggest waste of time of any activity one could choose... yes, that is my judgment of the word, thought process, and activity we call judging... so I am judgmental after all... and obviously, wasting my time...

we went to the House of Blues to see Spill Canvas, to be exact, because I declare (judge?) Spill Canvas to be the next Elvis and The Beatles... well, then again, I think there are too many people around making music these days for anyone to pull off such a sheer domination of the music business, but the lead singer has the talent to be bigger than Jesus (oh wait, that was what John said that got him killed some fifteen years after he said it, wasn't it?... I will have to remember to be extra alert in 2021 then... I wonder if I'll start looking at six year olds more suspiciously now)...

I am obvious distracted by the voices in my head so if you are not as amused as I am, well, oh well... I mean, I don't intentionally set out to blaspheme or mock history, tragedy, or anything really... it just seems to happen because I find amusement in my head no matter what I am thinking about... hopefully you don't see any harm in it cuz there isn't and it would be sad if you tried to put some there...

and music is on next to me for a change (I so pull out a radio here at work, which fits in with my ten year hiatus from active involvement in music on any level {I mean, not even turning it on for myself in a deliberate way, no less making mix tapes/CDs, no less singing or playing or going out of my way to find musical people to hang with... I did hope my music groups might attract some real-world musical friends, but no such luck for any of my groups here in Orlando... I can only guess that there are not enough people on line in this town to use the internet to make connections... I wonder if Craig has a list here yet)...

and I just ate a half a decadent meat-cheese-sauce sub... the Vegan in me shivers, but life goes on... it's my first meal since Saturday night and I drank at least 20 ounces of Code Red, which is my first Code Red in a few days, so I am buzzing... and there are two Ding Dongs staring up at me wondering when they will be eaten, so it will probably be a bouncy few hours ahead until the day shift arrives... I work all day with them, so this extra energy will keep me from falling over in my fifteenth hour...

it was music and Spill Canvas and their potential that had this particular bouncing started... of course many artists with amazing potential cash in and sell out and give up the creative process in order to produce music for their managers and record companies (which is so sad because most never even realize they left behind the creative uniqueness that gave them the chance to become mediocre stars... the real stars are the ones who continue creating, innovating, and exploring their talents {and taking risks} all through their careers... maybe these four boys from South Dakota will do that)... but both lyrically and musically there is great potential and I believe they should be headlining their own tour by next year and they have the potential to soar (keyboards could help, but they already use keyboards, strings, and orchestration on their CDs)... and the lead singer has the seeds of that magic in his voice and slow deliberate movements that make the girls swoon and I saw sparks of guitar that I hope to see more of...

the opening band was Inkwell, local and worth checking out again... and the headliner, Mae, had some good music even if they were proselytizing, but for me, Spill Canvas was worth the price of admission all by themselves... so live music made this weekend wonderful... we dragged Rasputin to the concert and he enjoyed the music but expressed some discomfort about being twice the age of the average person there... I'd say only about twenty percent were legal drinking age (21 here in Florida) if that many... the energy was great and I find it amusing when someone relates to me agelessly (or even flirts with me) in the dark... I smile and do not encourage it knowing they will probably be embarrassed when the lights come back up...

ageism, just one more of life's ridiculous prejudices so accepted that it's bad form to even point out it's a prejudice most of the time... I wonder what an Evanescence concert will be like (I hope to see them one of these days)... yes, I know, it's a far step from Warped Tour, but I love all sorts of music... we've got tickets for Hawthorn Heights (and a few other bands playing with them) and a few other concerts so far and hopefully we'll see a dozen more by the end of the year... one of these days I will make a list of the bands I want to see and keep track of schedules more so it's not always Precious choosing... Paramore is on my list... but Spill Canvas remains near the top for me among the newer bands...

just goes to show that some great music can be seen live in a relatively intimate setting for under $20 (this one was $15)... I resent the $60, $80, and $100+ price tags most of the big groups put on their tickets these days... same for Broadways shows... $90 for Wicked last year was too much in my mind, especially for seats so far up and away that facial expressions were left to the imagination, but Precious bought those and the balcony was all that was left... I am obviously spoiled by the center orchestra seats I got used to while living in NYC... I seldom sat past the fifth row... that is a theatre experience...

anyway, that's the highlight of where I've been in recent days... more will most likely slip into the other entries and who knows, maybe this week I will actually upload all the entries so they will become part of the unread history of life in black and white (realistically, how many people do you think will read back on thirty or forty or fifty or more entries?... shhhh, I'll keep dreaming you all will)...

love your life (and enjoy it too) J
