enrolling at university

I was probably asleep when I wrote this, or should have been, which would probably be a great title for a seriously amusing entry that made sense only if you had years to analyze it, but we have what we have and we'll make the best of it... I did not get that sandwich last night, worked the night away, and when I got home this morning I did not go to sleep, but rather continued the conversation with Rasputin and Precious even as I nodded off in the big green chair... nodding off did not last long, as we went to register Precious in school, me along to cut through red tape as I have a history with the registrar and guidance office at the school... a good history, a professional history, stop reading with your evil minds for a moment, after all, Precious is here...

if you didn't laugh, we're not connecting too well so start again... or give me a call and get to know me so I don't have to work so hard at putting words together to amuse you (is that what this is?)... after all, if everybody was a closer personal friend or loving family, we'd all be great writers, aye?...

no offense, Canada...

meanwhile, all the personal or references that may appear private are probably blowing over your head and that is ok unless you don't want them to in which case it is your responsibility to stand up and face the wind and breath in the knowledge that would otherwise elude you if you just sat there wondering what the heck I am rambling on about... in other words, read paragraph two again and think about it this time...

bureaucracy still amazes me, even as I cut through it... the former school would not release records to the student or parent because they fear tampering with the records... the new school needs the records to enroll the student... you'd think that schools would not want a week to go by with a kid out of school, but that would generally be the case for a kid moving across country (or, forbid the thought, out of country) unless someone knows the system and pushes the right buttons, which usually means stroking the secretaries with praise and appreciation (which they well deserve) as you basically walk the paperwork through the system either physically by hand or by polite but firm confirmation phone calls... "did you receive the fax?... are you holding it?... did you pull the file?... are you faxing it back?... if you do it right now while we are here at the other school we can sign and finish the enrollment and the kid doesn't have to miss any days, so please if it wouldn't be too much trouble could you just do your job well today before you go on break?"

ok, so maybe we left out the last bit of sarcasm... but you don't know how often Bobcat Goldwaith screams obscenities in my mind as I smile and politely conclude an appeal for some bureaucrat to simply read a few lines, stamp, sign, initial, or just move a piece of paper from one pile to the other and press a few keys on their computer terminal... maybe you've been there...

so anyway, I turned on my Rico Suave charm and convinced the registrar and her secretary that we are not dangerous terrorists seeking to infiltrate the country by passing as poor shlubs enrolling in high school and a well timed fax and follow up phone call achieved successful transfer of vital documents from the school in Ohio to the local school (which is called University, even though it is not a University, and I work at a place called University, a different place, also not a University, but we'll leave those confusions for another time), we've got an appointment for Monday morning with the guidance office to select classes and start school... Tuesday are the FCATs, the standardized statewide exams... talk about timing...

afterwards we went out for a fine Mexican lunch... I had the Chimichanga and half of a Burrito (Rasputin shared, knowing I have a buffet mentality and I am rarely satisfied with a standard one course restaurant meal)... and then when we got home I shared some of my chocolate... well, I left a few pieces... and we all watched The Lizzie McGuire Movie for the first time... well, for me it was the first time... and the culmination of the wistful nostalgia of being in high school in love with life and friends and dreams and music and fortune and fame coming true was complete... sigh... and there was the excitement for the day...

since I run out of fingers and toes when I try to count how many hours it has been since I last slept, I think I'll pass out now...
