a computer weekend

a weekend of computers... what with yesterday spent mostly writing... today I spent almost the entire day playing on (learning about) my other computer... the old desktop from 1998 that I got for $100, in case you were not around when I picked it up last year... I finally connected it to DSL and what a different (and still bubbling with potential excitement kind of) experience that is... unfortunately it's got no desk or chair and is not close enough to the big green chair to be comfortable and it'll be shared with Precious until she gets a computer, so it can not be set up the way I would if I was the only one using it... so while I may be more communicative (or at least connected), the computer won't be online for me all the time... but the big change (maybe) is that I installed ICQ... after being without the program for several years, I was able to download, install, and log in as if I was never away... almost... my hundreds of contacts and all the data that went with my accounts are not listed... and even though I have the files on my other laptopm, I doubt they would be convertable after at least four years... the last version of ICQ I had was 99b...

anyway, there's a lot on that desktop that was on it when I bought it and since my Windows Disks and all my software went the way of someone else's pockets, I didn't qipe the drive clean and reinstall from scratch, but the DSL and ICQ installed without incompatibility issues so it's an ok computer for sharing I guess... I still don't have DSL available to me on my computer though... or drive space and memory enough to get messaging software installed... playing with the ICQ and DSL did give me more impetus to find all the bills, settle up with Rasputin, count my money, and figure out how much I can spend on a computer I can call mine... for the record, my ICQ number is 2119422 (well, that's my main number... I have several more that I seldom used)... I suppose if you send messages, I'll find them when I log on, but I don't think I'll be logging on daily or more than a couple of times a week... more likely, only on weekends... but we shall see... ICQ can be addictive... but just to demonstrate my amazing will power, I did not install AIM... next time...

I had to turn on (with crossed fingers) my old laptop and convince the keyboard and mouse (which, like the computer itself, only works half the time) to give me some information so I could get my mail... I may have to remember and enter my passwords every time now... of course the mailboxes were full and the accounts were bouncing so I had to head over to my groups to tell the server that I am alive and my email will not bounce now so they can reactivate my accounts and send me the mail that piles up on my desktop... there's a few hundred thousand emails there now... one of these days I'll delete them all, but first I'll give some thought to how I might figure out if there's any mail on that computer that I want to read... odds are there is some, since those addresses are/were my primary website addresses and one of them was my primary email address until it just got buried in SPAM...

for the record, these are the addresses you should not use if you want to reach me: candor AT writeme DOT com... webbot AT att DOT net... pandor AT prodigy DOT net... riccan AT prodigy NOT net... and candor AT att DOT net... sysquash AT bigfoot DOT com... anonanonanon AT newyorkoffice DOT com... and any candoor DOT 8m DOT com address... I think that's it... alas, the cost (in dollars, time, and in lost contacts) of being online almost decade... if you used those addresses to try to talk to me and wonder why you never heard back from me, well, now you know... you were buried in SPAM and I have not figured out a way to help you dig (or eat) your way out...

use the DLand addresses, they are still not overwhelmed by SPAM (though candora is getting close to being cut off from email)... anyway, back to the ICQ... I explored the features minimally (I used to have an ICQ help site, but have not updated that since 1999) and found out that profiles and information can be changed without logging into accounts... I was able to enter information in two different people I never met (I ICQed them to warn them and included my telephone number and I didn't know that my phone was on silence so maybe the private call that I can not return was from one of those two people... go figure, I try to help and connect and my equipment isn't ready... wonder if that was a trick of my subconscious)... any day (well, maybe any weekend now) now I might by chatting again...

so what else is going on around here?... Precious is on Spring Break, so she's got the TV in the living room programmed for her favorites for the week... the kitchen is piling up with splatters on the stove and counters and dirty dishes in the sink again... I point it out and then move the dirty stuff out of my way, piling it in the one side of the sink so I have a clean side to fill my water bottle and wash my dishes... I've taken to using just a couple of dishes and one set of silverwear, washing them immediately after I use them, so I am sure I am not contributing to the mess piling up and setting the best example I can set... the living room is still cluttered with stuff that belongs in their bedrooms... I don't know why stuff isn't getting put away, I put all the kitchen stuff away and all of my stuff away and they've had plenty of sit around and watch TV time... so much for Raspy saying he was tired of the clutter...

Precious: "do you know where the forks are?"
Me: "I think they're in the dishwasher"
Precious: "all of them?"
Me: "the silverwear draw is empty, all the kitchen stuff is unpacked, what do you think?"

I left her to figure it out for herself... I haven't put anything in the dishwasher since I've been here... it's been full for a week... we've been here two weeks... I've learned that 1. piles of anything fall over sooner or later and 2. no amount of external suggestion changes a person's habits... I am hoping that the crash of mess, when it happens, might trigger enough of a reaction within one or both of them to motivate them to clean up behind themselves more often... I should have known that when I finally unpacked the dishes, they would pile up dirty until there were no more clean ones... and there, for the few of you who are interested, is another weekend summary of life around here...
