2004-12-03 - 3:35 a.m. blame it on TV this entry will mostly likely be influenced by the TV, which is currently on and trying to get my attention... that's what TVs do, in case you didn't know... just what they do with all the attention they get is anybody's guess, but that's not the point, now is it?... so anyway, does anybody see a few different people when looking at (or listening to) Josh Groban, or is it just me... since Precious played his music non-stop for days for a while, I finally listened enough to wonder if he is secretly slipping spiritual messages into his lyrics or is he truly a humanist romantic... and then, while glancing up at the VH1 show 20 Most Awesomely Bad Songs of 2004, I saw them superimpose Michael Bolton over Josh and what was eerie for me was I was seeing Weird Al Yankovic as Josh was singing... suddenly I got this flash of Weird Al coming out from behind his irreverent satires and attempting to be sincere and looking like a gawky nerdy nebish and there was Josh... now I love the music and some of the lyrics (after all, I love show music, mushy romantic music, and the songs Micheal Crawford sings... anyway, as usual I liked some of the songs the hip generation liked to bash just cuz it makes for good copy (the sensitive and emotionally fragile and depressed make such an easy target for cutting commentary... and mockery sells well in this culture)... anyway, I agree with their pan of Juvenile and Ludicris (who are apparently, based on their lyrics, aptly named... and what's with Mace turning preacher and still rapping the same old rap?... the religious thing not paying off?), but I wish our culture would stop kicking those who are down or not quite sure of themselves... the way I see it, if someone is putting on airs or rapping tough, wither they are pretending or not, they are fair game... if you're not sure of yourself and can't be honest about it, you deserve to be called on your pretentious thuggery... but if you are genuinely bleeding (like feeling Jewel's Foolish Games or, remember Eric Carmen and All By Myself... are you afraid of real tears?), I respect that and applaud the courage it takes to share the vulnerability without pretense or posing... anyway, the same thing kind of happened when I think of other celebrities and personalities and actors and artists... remember Robert Smith and The Cure?... Emo Phillips?... and then there's Britney (yeah, Spears)... is she really complaining about the attention she gets because she air-humps in cotten underwear so well that she has young men crossing their legs the hide the erections popping up at the mere thought of her?... I suppose that is her perogative, huh?... but dang, I'll unabashedly admit that watching her buns and hips gyrate makes me wish virtual sex was not just something for sci-fi fantasy and future times... feel free to send me a custom-made Britney Spears RealDoll (then again, there are others too) if you're a generous millionaire who is wondering what to get me for Xmas or Chanukah or New Years or my birthday or whatever... maybe I should update my gift-wish-list (as opposed to my actual wishlist), wherever it might be... actually, a state of the art computer would be more useful, but hey, I can dream some millionaire will adopt me and buy me everything I might want on whim or stuff I dream about, right?... see what happens when I watch too much VH1?...
